Dana and Gary describe the evolution of their latest CD In Your Head:
The recording was inspired by the highly successful premiere of Dreamworlds, a work for one piano, four hands commissioned of long-time friend and colleague Lewis Spratlan for our recital at Mount Holyoke College in February 2016. Colleagues Donald Wheelock and David Sanford agreed to compose works for the project, as did former piano student Matthew St. Laurent. Lew introduced us to composer Daniel Asia when we relocated to Tucson, Arizona. In the early 1990's, colleague and friend John La Montaine coached us on his Sonata for Piano, Four Hands, Op. 25, which completes the playlist.
Lew's previous collaborations with Parma Recordings led to an opportunity for us to work with the company to produce this album. The recording sessions took place at Futura Productions, a state-of-the-art recording studio located in the Roslindale neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. A former Masonic lodge and the largest studio recording space in New England, it is home to a 9' Steinway concert grand piano considered to be one of the finest recording pianos on the East Coast. We found it to be one of the most magnificent instruments we have ever played.
Having relocated from Massachusetts to Arizona, in part to escape the long, cold New England winters, we were struck by the irony of traveling to Boston in February to record, but the Futura and Parma recording, production and editing professionals made this a truly gratifying experience.
