CD Recording of Solo Piano Works
In 2017 Gary recorded a CD of pieces listed in Dana’s catalogue of solo piano compositions. The works range from early character pieces in salon style (such as Serenade in F-sharp Major; Romance in A Minor) to settings of Scottish folk song (Land o’ the Leal; Turn Ye to Me) and late works infused with French impressionist colors (Shadows; The Seal Woman’s Sea-joy).
Tracks of the CD can be heard here.
And the CD booklet can be accessed here.
Press notices and commentary:
“The CD is splendid - beautifully played and recorded and performances that are never self-indulgent, but strong and honest.”
—- John Purser, author of Scotland's Music: A History of the Traditional and
Classical Music of Scotland from Early Times to the Present Day
“Steigerwalt plays with conviction and flair, bringing out melodic and contrapuntal lines and exploiting the rich possibilities of the keyboard, which Hopekirk herself did so adeptly. The tone is never forced, and the changing moods of the music are well captured. Steigerwalt plays much as one imagines Hopekirk herself would have done: there are powerful moments mixed with lyricism, and the technique is at all times assured and commanding. . . . There is much to commend in this music, and Steigerwalt is a powerful and persuasive advocate.”
—- Dorothy de Val, Nineteenth-Century Music Review, Cambridge University Press
“The performances by Gary Steigerwalt—who is currently writing what will undoubtedly become the definitive biography of the composer—couldn’t be more committed, skillful, or affectionate, while the program notes written with his wife Dana Muller (who wrote her doctoral dissertation on Hopekirk) are predictably winning and informative. If these devoted first recordings of her piano music can’t spark some interest in this forgotten composer, then nothing will.”
—- Jim Svejda, Fanfare
“[Hopekirk] is a discovery worthy of attention . . . . The music has a distinguished melodic content, along with a freshness that warms the ears. . . . All this is extremely well played by the pianist, . . . fully sympathetic to the music, and currently writing a biography of Hopekirk. Bravo!”

“Toccata Classics has a happy knack for rediscovery, and its CD devoted to the piano music of Helen Hopekirk is a shining example . . . . The most attractive works in this collection are in neo-Baroque style: the Suite for Piano and the Serenata Suite. Gary Steigerwalt plays these and everything else with refined expressiveness . . . .”
—- Michael Church, BBC Music Magazine
“I have really enjoyed listening to this CD, obviously because of the music but also because the performances and recording are so fine, and are accompanied by an encyclopaedic booklet written by the pianist Gary Steigerwalt and his wife, Dana Muller. They are devoted to researching and performing Hopekirk’s music – Muller has prepared a performing version of the Concertstuck for Piano and Orchestra as part of a doctoral dissertation on the composer - and doubtless the immense detail presented to us in the booklet derives from this devotion.”
